Welcome to the Edge of Eternity, We Have Spiderman

I was excited for Edge of Eternity prerelease this weekend. The set looked nice, and I couldn't wait for the entire furore over Final Fantasy to be over after what seemed like a protracted torture (it won't. I'm 99% sure they have 16 scene boxes in store for the holiday season and I'll have to hear everyone around me talk all about it again). Then they did it again, like they had done for past year to an alarming degree: the spoilers for Spiderman dropped.

It left me on such a sour note I decided to just go to EoE prerelease blind. Don't even have the interest to look at the cards anymore. I know that it's easy just not to mind spoilers. I do engage at my own pace, but it's the principle of the thing that I truly hate.

Mind you, EoE won't even be officially released until next week. Last time in Tarkir, the preorder deadline for my country was a day before Tarkir was even previewed, so people were expected to place their orders blind. We knew more about Final Fantasy than Tarkir at that point. I know, I know, I know the logistics of collaborating with another company, especially a franchise so coveted and beloved. That doesn't make the entire thing any less bizarre. It would seem like the entire PR schedules of WotC undercut each other, but they kept at it because... it worked anyway?

I like Final Fantasy. I like Spiderman. I like ATLA.

One would think it's a year for me, yet I'm writing a long essay about my feelings on Final Fantasy the set and it's taking a long time because putting it down is just so hard.

EoE will be my last prerelease of the year. I'll be back in Lorwyn. After that, who knows? It's funny that my feelings for Magic as a franchise is at all-time low, but I actually play more Magic in the last two months than the past one year combined because a new LGS opened near home and it's filled with great people. I don't plan to quit, because I can certainly play enough Magic to last me a lifetime with what I already have.

There's no profound way to end this post, unfortunately. I'm a bit sad, a bit pissed, and a bit tired. It's been a shockingly long time since we're allowed to enjoy something without shadows of the future looming over it.

But we'll be drafting tonight and I'll get to enjoy the best part of Magic: The Gathering.
